Customer Reviews: Great Board April 15, 2010 Jason Walker (OR, USA) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is actually my first ASUS board. I have been using MSI products for the last few years with no issues, so why the change? Upon reading the specifications of the new MSI, I liked the fact that ASUS has more features including the core unlocker that allows all cores to achieve full performance capabilities, also I've heard from friends that ASUS makes some really good bios chipsets. This board has some really noticeable features like USB 3 and SATA 6 which don't have so much of an impact on users now, but will soon in the future. Another feature which I have not seen before is the easy bios upgrade feature that allows a user to upgrade bios in bios and checks the file to be sure its compatible with the chipset. There are many other feature which I haven't had the chance to mess around with yet, like the Hybrid CrossfireX technology and ASUS TurboV EVO, not to mention even more overclocking features, however, I must admit I'm not one to overclock even with liquid cooling installed, mostly since I'm not a millionaire and can't afford to overheat a cpu, but if you have the money and experience this board will definitely take advantage of what your processor can do, also this will support the new 6 cores; also this new chipset features the Radeon HD 4290 onboard GPU that supports 512mb and has direct X 10.1 features and comes with multiple VGA outputs, HDMI, DVI, RGB. I only used the onboard when first firing her up, so I didn't get a chance to see what it could do in games like Bioshock or Battlefield Bad Company, but I can imagine being able to play at 1920 X 1080p with just about every setting maxed. If there is one negative thing about this board it would have to be that it has no floppy drive support, and while you don't really need one anyways, I did buy a brand new one, along with floppy disks, but that's just being to used to older tech since it was required to have a floppy disk to create partitions and for RAID drivers in the past.Overall, the price and technology in this board is more than exceptional and had it up and running with the first power on without any problems, ASUS also gives you some pretty good software on their driver CD like ASUS Probe 2 which has a great interface and shows motherboard and cpu temperatures. Now I just need to save some money for another Radeon card then I can give crossfire X a test run. -Great board.

The best mother's cash card 890GX chipset you can buy! whether to build a new system based on the six cores of AMD phenom II or whatever ... play Modern Warafre 2 resolusion low and everything in minimum
and plays super smooth 100% recommended! Buy it!
works September 5, 2010 Rothbardian Zeppelin Fan No trouble with peripherals or Windows 7. I did have to do a little tweak though: disable one of the 2 audio drivers (HDMI or Realtek). I disabled the Realtek one, and after I did that, it's been smooth running with no crashing. However, whatever HDMI signal it's sending out does not play nicely with my A/V receiver (I often have to hard reset my CPU several times before my receiver will recognize the signal). The overclocking is simple. However, since I have to hard reset too often, it messes with that, so I haven't been doing it. This was my first build, and this motherboard has proved to be a good choice.
Also, the community on the Asus support forums is great. Just about any problem can be solved by people on there.
Faulty chip somewhere on motherboard September 3, 2010 Kent Dozier Everything works great on this motherboard... except it crashes after 60 seconds when in BIOS or in a 3D game. Oddly, it works fine in both Windows XP and Windows 7, as long as I do not load up any 3D games (high res video playback works great). I replaced every single component of the system except my processor, but nothing fixed the problem. It took me 30 days to figure this out, replacing all parts (power supply, external graphics, memory, hard drive, O/S reinstall, O/S change, etc), so I missed the RMA window. Now Asus is giving me the runaround on testing it, leaving it to me to take apart my system and test the board outside of a case, etc. It's a major pain.
I have had this board for about 5 weeks now, and I just tested the onboard graphics one more time and it seems like I'm down from 60 seconds in the BIOS menus before it crashes to about 5 seconds. It seems to have something to do with heat. I tried again first thing in the morning after a cool night and it let me get into the BIOS settings long enough to disable onboard graphics, so now it's stable in Windows again with an external graphics card. I do not understand why running a 3D game on the external graphics card causes the machine to crash, but it must somehow be related because the behavior is exactly the same as in the BIOS when I did not even have the video card ordered yet. I am using the latest BIOS of course.
